Fragrance-free vs no added fragrance: a clear skincare guide

Clime Kind Daily Barrier Rescue Moisturiser packaging

Fragrance-free and no added fragrance may sound interchangeable when you are shopping quickly. At Clime Kind, they describe different products. Taking a moment to read the full formula is especially useful if you have previously reacted to perfume or botanical ingredients.

A reassuring product name or a mild scent is not enough to establish suitability. The clearest choice comes from the ingredient list, the brand’s description and your own known sensitivities.

What fragrance-free means in this range

Daily Barrier Rescue Moisturiser and Overnight Barrier Recovery Cream are Clime Kind’s two fragrance-free facial moisturisers. Neither should be grouped with our fragranced cleanser, body cream or shampoo simply because they belong to the same collection.

Fragrance-free can be a useful starting point when fragrance is something you avoid. It is not a promise of zero allergy risk: a person can react to other ingredients, and a formula that suits one reader may not suit another.

The AAD’s dry-skin guidance recommends fragrance-free products for dry, sensitive skin. That is general selection advice, rather than an endorsement of any particular Clime Kind product.

Why no added fragrance is a different description

Daily Hydration Toner has no added perfume. Its formula includes rose flower water, camomile and strawberry extracts, so botanical ingredients can contribute their own scent.

It would be misleading to describe that toner as identical to the two fragrance-free moisturisers. Someone who avoids a particular plant ingredient still needs to check for it, even where no perfume has been added.

The toner is also optional. If its ingredients do not fit your preferences or sensitivities, you can leave it out and continue with a suitable moisturiser. A simple routine does not become incomplete without a scented or botanical step.

This is a guide to the current range, not a ranking from safe to unsafe. The relevant question is whether a formula fits your own needs and any professional advice you have received.

Smell alone is an unreliable shopping test. A fragranced formula can smell faint, while a product without added perfume may retain the scent of its ingredients. Read the stated fragrance profile and the INCI together, rather than trying to decide from a quick sniff whether a product contains something you avoid.

Read, test and keep the distinction clear

Look for perfume under names such as Parfum or Fragrance, and check the rest of the list for ingredients you already know you avoid. Do not assume “natural” means free from potential triggers.

Follow the AAD’s advice on testing a new skincare product before wider use, while respecting rinse-off directions. Home testing cannot diagnose an allergy or guarantee future tolerance. If you have a diagnosed allergy, use your clinician’s specific guidance and the current packaging list to make the final decision.
