Do you need a toner in a simple skincare routine?

You can have a complete, useful skincare routine without toner. That is the first thing to know before deciding whether to add one. A hydrating toner offers a light intermediate layer, but it does not replace cleansing, moisturising or daytime sun protection.

The better question is not “Am I missing a step?” but “Would this particular step make my routine more comfortable or enjoyable?”

What a hydrating toner adds

Clime Kind’s Daily Hydration Toner combines rose flower water, glycerin, Sodium PCA and sodium hyaluronate with camomile and strawberry extracts. The watery texture provides an optional hydration step after cleansing.

Glycerin, Sodium PCA and hyaluronic acid belong to the humectant category: ingredients that help attract and retain water. DermNet explains how humectants fit within moisturising formulas. Their presence describes an ingredient role, not a reason to assume that toner alone will provide everything a cream does.

Do not expect a hydrating toner to scrub the skin, remove waterproof make-up or deliver the same effect as a targeted treatment. It earns its place by offering a texture and hydration layer you like.

Where it goes, if you choose to use it

Follow the toner’s label: after cleansing, splash a little into your hands and gently apply it over the face, avoiding direct contact with the eyes. There is no need to rub repeatedly with cotton pads or treat tingling as a sign of success.

Next, apply a suitable moisturiser. For a light morning finish, Daily Barrier Rescue Moisturiser is the fragrance-free daytime option in the Clime Kind range. Your usual suitable sunscreen follows as a separate step according to its directions.

At night, the same toner can sit between cleansing and your evening moisturiser if you enjoy it. You do not need one toner for the morning and another for the evening simply to fill both slots.

Know when skipping it makes sense

  • Your current moisturiser already leaves your skin comfortable.
  • You are introducing another product and want to assess one change at a time.
  • You prefer a shorter routine or are watching your budget.
  • You avoid rose water or another ingredient in the toner.

Daily Hydration Toner has no added perfume, but it is not the same proposition as our two fragrance-free facial moisturisers. Rose flower water and other botanicals may have a natural scent, and plant-derived ingredients can still be unsuitable for an individual sensitivity.

If you have reacted to fragrance or botanical ingredients before, check the full list rather than assuming that a fresh scent or “no added fragrance” settles the question.

Do not pour toner into the moisturiser bottle to combine the steps. Use each finished product as directed, with its own container kept closed between uses. If you want a genuinely shorter morning, omitting an optional layer is simpler than trying to turn two formulas into one.

Judge the extra step on its own merits

Keep the rest of your routine familiar when trying toner. Follow the AAD’s guidance on testing new skincare and stop if a reaction develops. Home testing can help you notice tolerance; it cannot rule out allergy.

After a sensible introduction, ask whether the toner makes your routine feel better to use. If the answer is yes, it has a clear place. If the answer is no, leaving it out is a considered choice, not a skincare mistake.
